Interview:
1. I started sewing in first grade when I made my teacher a gift. Then when I was older, I started to sew American Girl Doll clothes for my dolls. Later on, I started making baby quilts for my teachers who were having babies. I had become so interested with sewing I started taking classes and making other quilts, and I also sewed some of my own clothes.
2. I love to sew my own clothes that I can wear. It makes me happy to wear the clothes that I make because I feel confident and proud. The shirts and quilts that I sewed before, were simpler than the shirts and quilts that I sew now. Each time I create something new, I challenge myself because I am learning a new skill.
3. I do not have a favorite artist. Whether it is for sewing or designing, I am inspired by everyone’s work.
4. The inspiration from my fashion designs come from all around. Even a pattern on fabric. I get most of the inspiration from the fashion magazines. They are very resourceful. Most of my fashion magazines have many of pages ripped and cut out.
5. When I had taken a class at FIT, I designed a dress that I loved. When my birthday was coming, I decided to sew my design, and wear it on my birthday. It is the blue, pink, and purple dress.
6. My favorite piece is the rolling square quilt, which is the one that looks like a star. I love how I put all the colors together, especially yellow. It is hard to fit yellow in a quilt. I think that the overall look of the quilt just amazes me, and I am amazed that I did the quilt. It was definitely a challenge for me.
7. I had the most fun making the blue Halloween dress. I thought of the idea through my head, made a sketch, and put different pieces from different patterns together. I was so happy to create a one-of-a-kind, and then wear it.
8. I entered one of my quilts and a dress in the Long Island County Fair at Old Bethpage Village when I was 12. I placed 2nd for both in the junior division. Last year, I entered my favorite quilt and won first place in my category. Earlier this year, I also entered my favorite quilt again in the Long Island Quilters Show, and won first in the junior group.
9. When I am older, I would like to make a career out of my sewing and designing. I love to create my own clothes and wear it. I love to make new quilts and learn new techniques. It makes me happy!

Ryan Helfant
Ryan is 18 years old and lives in Roslyn Heights. She is currently at college at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Ryan received a scholarship to Pratt thanks to her amazing photography! Ryan always liked photography. When she was little she would steal her parents camera and use up all the film. It wasn't until 10th grade when Ryan became serious with her work. In 10th grade Ryan was in Photography 1 with teacher Julia Donavan. Julia Donavan runs the photography program and helped save the schools dark room. Ryan's favorite type of photography is color film because she says it looks better than film, and its is more fun because it makes the pictures look more realistic.

Jade Marcus
Jade is a Junior at The Wheatley School. Last year, she took a drawing and painting class with one of Wheatley's finest art teachers, Ms. Walsh. Jade became interested in drawing at a very young age due to the fact that her grandfather was an artist himself! "I admire his work still today"- Jade. She took her first art class about cartooning when she was six. Jades favorite type of art to make is anything involving drawing or painting. She enjoys using many colors to make her work pop and stand out. When asked who her favorite artist was Jade could't decide, but she said that artists who truly inspire her are those who think outside of the box!
"Art, for me, is an escape from everyday life and it is a world completely my own. I can express myself in whichever way I want and just let my pencil or paint brush flow on the canvas."
Steph Kazhiloti
Steph is a senior at The Wheatley School. She lives in Roslyn Heights. Steph's favorite type of art is drawing. She prefers drawing over painting and other art methods because she feels like she has more control over what she is doing with a pencil. Steph always had an interest in drawing. She first showed interest as early as the age of three but began seriously drawing when she was ten. She became interested at an early age because her mom is an artist as well. When Steph was little her mom was always drawing around her. Her mom always encouraged her to draw and still does now.
"My mom is my inspiration."
